He was born April 26, 1926 in Parker, south of Yakima, WA to Masakazu and Teiko Tomita. Raised in Sunnydale (now part of Burien), Jun attended Highline High School until the WWII Japanese internment took his family to Pinedale and Tule Lake, CA and Heart Mountain, WY. While doing factory work in Chicago, he was drafted by the U.S. Army and served in military intelligence at Fort Snelling, MN, and The Presidio of Monterrey, CA. Jun graduated from the University of Washington in 1954 with a degree in chemistry, married Florence M. Hayashi and they moved to St. Paul, MN. Jun had a 32 year career at 3M as a chemical engineer developing and patenting industrial adhesives and coatings. Jun was active with the Hazel Park Congregational Church in St. Paul. He enjoyed playing bridge, bowling, golf, and traveling. After retiring, Jun and Flo moved back to Seattle in 1987 and for the past five years have resided at the Hearthstone Retirement Community near Green Lake. Three words that best describe Jun are stoic, honest, and wise.
Jun was predeceased by his parents and sister, Kiku. Jun is survived by his wife of 60 years, Flo, and their four loving children, Alyce (Thomas) Tomporowski, Perham, MN; Paul Tomita (Colleen Quinn), Seattle; Susan Deeg, Zionsville, IN; and Julie Tomita, Seattle; his beloved grandchildren David Tomporowski, Nora, Katie, Carl, and Lily Deeg; sister Kay Hashimoto, brother Joe (Peggy) Tomita, and nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for donations in Jun's memory to Nikkei Concerns (http://www.nikkeiconcerns.org/) or NW Parkinson's Foundation (http://www.nwpf.org/give/).
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, 2014 in the Hearthstone chapel, 6720 E. Green Lake Way N., Seattle.
