Our beloved aunt/great aunt (“Jeh”/”Goobs”), sister and friend Jeannie was born in Seattle, Washington in 1967, shortly after her parents and older brother immigrated to the United States from Guangdong Province, China, by way of Hong Kong. She was a true Beacon Hill girl, living there all her life.
Jeannie attended both Kimball and Beacon Hill Elementary School, Madison Middle School and Cleveland High School, making lifelong friends throughout her youth. After graduating from the University of Washington in 1989 with a business degree, she began her 30+ year career with Nordstrom, where she met more wonderful friends. She enjoyed her work and her colleagues, brightening up the work day with her kindness and sense of humor.
Jeannie’s favorites were three Fs – family, friends and food. She loved trying new restaurants and sharing meals, good times, and good conversation with friends and family. Korean BBQ, Boiling Point hot pot, Sprite, Yifang fruit tea – those were some of her must haves. She took care of her mom, and babysat her nephews, niece and grandnieces when they were younger – taking them to eat, driving them to and from various events. Sunday family dinners were very important to her. On occasion, she could be coaxed out of her comfort zone to partake a random or silly adventure, often as the driver. On other occasions, she was the one doing the coaxing.
Also high on Jeannie’s list: entertainment and sports. An avid fan of the Sonics, Seahawks, Sounders and Mariners, she would attend games or watch them on TV - except for Seahawks games, as those stressed her out too much! She enjoyed watching Korean dramas with friends, as well as reality shows/competitions, and would have scheduled times to watch a show with various friends while discussing it over the phone with each other. She loved Hello Kitty, harbored crushes on Keanu Reeves, the legendary Kenny G and Jungkook from BTS; and was up to date on the latest celebrity news, even about celebrities she didn’t care about (but you did).
Jeannie was loyal, generous, easy-going (except for the occasional strong opinion), empathetic and kind. She was frequently treating others to meals, asking after others, giving rides, whatever she could do to help. She possessed quite the sense of humor, cracking comments with a dry wit or being very silly. She had an excellent memory and always acknowledged birthdays and anniversaries. Jeannie was, as one friend stated, ‘just so easy to be friends with.’
Jeannie’s life is one that is gone too soon, and she is dearly loved and missed. We are all lucky to have had her in our lives, and to have been able to create fond memories with her that we can look back on.
‘Erase all sad memories – hold each other’s hands and smile.’ - BTS
Jeannie is survived by her nephews Gary (Robin) and Sunny (Kathy); niece Shirley; great nieces Kaila and Jadyn; sister-in-law Soo; and great puppy nephew Bentley. She is now reunited with her older brother, Ming; mother, Noon; father, Kwok Check; and another older brother who passed in infancy. 💗💗
