Jan and her parents moved quite a bit due to her father’s military service during the war years. She spent most of her schooling in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. Jan was student council president and Governor General’s Medalist in the 12th grade. Jan went on to nursing school and graduated from the Brandon General Hospital School of Nursing in 1957 where she attained the title of class Valedictorian. In 1961, she married Robert E. Cox (“Bob”) and, in 1962, had her son Robert “Jay,” her “heart’s joy”.
Throughout her nursing career, Janice worked at many different hospitals in Canada and Washington State. At Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound, she was instrumental in developing the total joint replacement Patient Education Program.
In addition to nursing, Jan loved traveling, music, her many friends and, above all, her family. She continued her “caring for others” long into her retirement. Jan belonged to the Beta Sigma Phi International, Order of the Eastern Star, Southgate #190 and WSNA/ANA. She was a member of Lake Burien Presbyterian Church for many years.
Janice is survived by her son Jay of Tacoma, WA, sisters Gail (Ted) King from Cranbrook, BC, Canada and Gwen (Len) Sanderson of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and nephew Brian King of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She is predeceased by her husband of over 40 years, Bob, and her parents Dorothy and Charlie.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held on Friday, January 17, 2020 at 11:00 am at Butterworth Funeral Home, 520 W. Raye St., Seattle, WA 98119. Remembrances may be made to the charity of your choice.
