James Demetre, devoted and beloved husband and father, died peacefully on April 2 after a brief illness. Those who knew him will remember a man whose kindness and generosity of spirit manifested itself in all he did. Born in Seattle in 1931 to Albanian immigrants Spero and Madaline Demetre, he attended Ballard High School and the University of Washington, where he competed on the school's celebrated rowing team. After a stint in the U.S. Air Force, he acquired Standard Knitting, his father's sweater company, and with his brothers Vic and John, established Demetre Ski Sweaters. The iconic brand, worn by the U.S. Olympic Ski Team in the 1970s and 80s, is still remembered by Seattleites and skiers everywhere.
The true focus of Jim's life was always his family. He married Julie Paloukos in 1963, and together they raised their sons Jim and Andy in the beautiful city of Seattle. They will always cherish memories of dinners together, museum visits, trips to Europe, and days spent at the Ballard sweater factory.
Jim's knowledge of knitting and passion for good design were gifts he shared with many in the clothing industry. After selling his business, he worked at Eddie Bauer, where he mentored many young colleagues.
For thirty years, Jim also assisted Julie and her staff at Paideia Academy, the downtown Seattle Montessori school she founded, where he took much joy in the company of the children.
In his final days, Jim spoke with gratitude of his life's good fortune and the satisfaction he had found in work and family. He is survived by his wife and sons, brother John of Sun Valley ID, and many nieces and nephews. A public celebration of life will be scheduled for the spring. Remembrances can be made to the Seattle Art Museum, Pacific Northwest Ballet, or the charity of your choice.
