Jack was born in Eureka, California and raised in Ferndale, California by his mother, Julia Hansen, and maternal grandparents. He grew up in a Danish community where he spoke Danish and continued to do so throughout his life. When he was eight years old, his mom married Fritz Dahlquist who raised him as his own and became the dad he never had. Jack graduated from Ferndale High School in 1941.
Jack attended San Jose State College before joining the Navy as a Pharmacist Mate. He attained the rank of Pharmacist Mate First Class and was stationed at Seattle Naval Hospital where he met, LTJG Helen Egberg, Nurse Corps. Jack was preparing to deploy to Tinian and while awaiting departure, was billeted in a stable that had the name 'Seabiscuit' over the stall. He was stationed at Tinian when the Enola Gay was dispatched to Japan.
Jack completed his degree in Accounting at San Jose State College. In 1948 he married Helen at University Lutheran Church in Seattle. He was hired by the Internal Revenue Service and spent his entire career there, advancing to the rank of Chief of the Audit Division for Washington.
After Jack's retirement at age 55, Helen and Jack became active in boating, spending months at a time cruising in the San Juan and Canadian islands. A highlight for Jack was cruising up the Fraser River with Queen City Yacht Club, and the Columbia and Snake Rivers, navigating multiple dams.
Helen and Jack raised their three daughters in Wedgwood. Helen died in 2004 and the home was sold in 2016.
Jack was a member of University Lutheran Church in Seattle and a lifetime member of the Queen City Yacht Club, serving as Treasurer for a number of years.
Jack is survived by his daughters Christy (Harley) Donner, Sherry Dahlquist, and Lisa Stephens (former spouse Doug). His grandchildren include Erik (Jenny) Donner, Brent Donner, Hannah Stephens, Julia Dahlquist and Jaclyn Dahlquist.
A special thanks to Aurica Cuc and her staff for the loving care that Jack received over the past four years.
