Born on April 26, 1925 and raised by parents Ivan and Mary Barker first in northeastern Montana before moving and living the majority of his life in Seattle (mainly in the Ballard community). Hugh passed away peacefully on May 21, 2017 after battling Parkinson’s for five years. Hugh was preceded in death by Lorraine, his wife of 64 years, and brothers Ivan (Joe) and William (Bill).
Hugh served in the Navy on the USS Maryland in World War 2 and also fought in the Korean War. He retired from the VA Hospital after working there for over 30 years. He then built a beautiful house and lived the rural life on Camano Island for several years before returning to Seattle to be closer to family.
Hugh is survived by his four children and their spouses, Cathy Hartje (Greg), Allan Barker (Patty), Carol Monsos (Mike) and Gary Barker (Stephanie), nine grandchildren, Ian Barker, Shannon Barker Yee, Kelly Hartje Reynolds, Jacob Barker, Chris Monsos, Daniel Barker, Lori-Anne Monsos Foster, Jennifer Barker and Lyndsey Hartje McEwen; fifteen great-grandchildren and countless nieces and nephews.
Hugh loved spending time with his family. He went on annual fishing trips, traveled several times to his beloved Montana and in the last few years of his life (even though he was wheel chair bound) took a Panama Cruise, Alaska Cruise and an automobile road trip all of the way across the country from Seattle to Boston and back. He was a role model to us all. We loved him so much and will miss him every day.
There will be no services at his request. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to autismspeaks.org – Team Luke.
Arrangements entrusted to Bleitz Funeral Home in partnership with Butterworth Arthur A. Wright Funeral Home of Seattle, Washington.
