He was born September 10,1931 in Faith, South Dakota, the son of Charles and Ruth Ward. He was the second of five siblings. He was raised in the Skagit Valley graduating from Sedro Woolley High School. He attended Western Washington, then finished his studies at University of Washington, graduating in 1953 with a degree in Accounting.
After meeting her at a mixer at the University of Washington, he married the love of his life and best friend, Ellen Swisher in 1953.
Hal served in the Army from 1953 to 1955 as a high-speed radio operator overseas and the Army reserve until 1962. He received a National Defense Service medal. After he returned home from service he became a CPA. He was the founder and owner of Ward & Company PS from which he retired in 2011.
Other affiliations include the WSCPA, First Presbyterian Church in Seattle, American Legion, Seattle Yacht Club (Past Treasurer 1987-88) and The WAC.
In his spare time he enjoyed spending time with family, the symphony, boating and playing bridge. He was an avid football fan. He loved to travel with Ellen exploring over two dozen countries. When walking on a beach, he would always make time to collect agates. Being very involved in his daughter’s early school years Hal was awarded the PTA Golden Acorn award.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen Ward, daughters Lynn (Tom) Wingard, Suzi Ward, grandchildren, Courtney Wingard (Andrew Parkhill) and Dalynn Wingard (Cosmo Touche Arends), his brothers Robert (Jeri) Ward and Donald Ward, and many nieces and nephews.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, clients and all who knew him.
Due to current Covid restrictions there will be a private family service scheduled immediately with plans for a celebration of life to be announced.
