In 1941, Gene was drafted into the US Army. He used his talents as a cook to serve at Camp Roberts, California. His experience and duties took him on numerous trips serving on the Troop Train, which transported troops to the East Coast before sending them off to go overseas. Gene was deployed overseas in 1943 to New Caledonia where he was promoted to Mess Sergeant at the Officer's Mess. He was responsible for organizing and cooking for over 120 high ranking officers. During his retirement, Gene and Priscilla, enjoyed traveling and Ballroom dancing. They visited many places together often joining friends on dance oriented cruises. He often liked to tell a joke or two to entertain people. Gene also liked to keep his mind engaged by reading book on trivial facts, and doing the crossword puzzles in the daily newspaper. He had made many friends in the dance community. He would often go out to the local community centers, two to three times a week to socialize, and fulfill his passion for dancing. His youthful energy was truly admired and an inspiration to many. Gene will be missed dearly.
