Fred “Bud” Locke passed away peacefully on February 14, 2019. He was born on
November 14, 1932 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire to Fred and Helen Locke.
A proud veteran of the Army, Fred served in the Korean War on the DMZ with the 40th
Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop 40th Infantry Division from 1952-1955.
In 1960, always ready for an adventure, Fred along with three friends drove from New
Hampshire to Alaska in search of what The Last Frontier had to offer. What was
supposed to be a summer spent in Anchorage turned into 15 years. There, he
discovered his love of the snow, mountains, skiing and the woman who would become
his wife of 53 years, Masae. Later, they moved from Anchorage to Vancouver B.C., and
eventually settled in the Seattle area where Fred continued to work for the U.S.
Customs Service for 38 years.
Never one to sit still, Fred held a lifelong love of sports, fitness and competition. In his
younger years, he played football, lacrosse, ran track and boxed. Later, he embraced
marathons (16 total including Boston), triathlons, swimming, ski racing and at the age of
79, earned his black belt in karate. When he wasn’t on the move, he was a voracious
reader and loved the movies.
Fred is survived by his wife, Masae; his daughter, Cathy Pirello (Mike) and
grandchildren, Ava and Mason.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 23rd at 12:30pm at
Sunset Hills Memorial Park followed by a Celebration of Life reception at Robinswood
House.
In lieu of flowers, please take a walk, go for a run or carve some turns on the slopes. In
Fred’s memory, do anything that gets you up and moving. As he was quoted by a local
newspaper in a 2007 interview “My advice is to get out and enjoy yourself, because life
is too short.”
