Esther Hipol Simpson was born on November 27, 1945 in Pacdal, Baguio City, Philippines, to Benito Corpuz Hipol and Salvacion Ubungen Floresca.  She was the eldest of five chidren: Elnora Hipol Bello, Benito Hipol, Jr., Rebecca Hipol and Ador Hipol.  She attended Paringao Elementary School in Bauang, La Union and Christ the King College in San Fernando, La Union where she graduated in 1958.  She attended high school at Christ the King College and graduated in 1962.  Esther pursued her nursing degree at St. Paul College in Manila where she received her Bachelor of Science, Nursing in 1967.  She was one of leaders who spearheaded the creation of their Class of 1967 Nursing Group, "Josie Maries".  Education was very important to her and she later obtained her Masters in Nursing at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines.  After graduation, she worked as a Registered Nurse at the Medical Center, Manila.  

Esther came to the United States in May 1973 and worked at Roosevelt Hospital in Chicago, Illinois.  In 1974, she met her "mahal", Bill Simpson and they were wed on May 24, 1975.  Their honeymoon baby and only son, Richie was born February 12, 1976.  This was the beginning of a beautiful life for the three of them. In April 1982, the family moved to Washington where Esther began working at Harbor View Hospital for the first year and spent the next 30 years at the VA Hospital in Seattle, WA.  She happily retired in October 31, 2014. 

Throughout her career, she was not only a successful nurse but, a prominent leader in her community.  She served as President of the Filipino Nurses Association, was an active leader and humble speaker in many associations such as the Paringao Elementary School Association of Washington, Filipino Community of Seattle, Tahanan, Ugnayan, the "Jose Maries"-Class of 1967 College Nursing Group and the KDP, Union of Democratic Filipinos (Chicago/Seattle).  Her talent goes as far as a recent written contribution to the KDP book, "A Time to Rise".  After retirement, Esther continued her passion in helping people and being an active leader in the community.  She never stopped making a difference in people's lives.  But, her true love of life was her family!  She and Bill traveled to many countries during their lifetime and she adored spending time with her son, Richie, daughter-in-law, Arlene and granddaughter, Daryan.

On January 13, 2018, she passed away peacefully at her home in Bothell, WA with her husband, Bill, son, Richie, sister Rebecca and Baby by her side.  She will be missed by many especially her cousins, nephews and nieces.  But, her lasting legacy will continue in her family and all the precious lives that she touched.  Her sweet smile, angelic voice and beautiful soul will be remembered forever.  Rest in peace, dear Esther.  Until we meet again, we love you so!

I have known and worked with Esther since I came to the VA back in 2001.  She took me under her wings and became my mentor for the Asian Pacific Islander programs for the VA until the day she retired.  She would always know when to calm me down by saying the right words.  She's one of the kindest, bravest and strongest person I have in my life.  She will be missed and remembered for all that she has done for me.
