Age 96, passed away on May 6th, 2013 at St. Peters Hospital in Olympia, Washington from sudden cardiac arrest. She was born in Sumner, Washington on July 24th, 1916 to Emmett Chester and Hattie May (Taylor) Dutcher. She was the second of six children; Bernice, Dorothy, Chester, Ruth, Warren, and Florence.
The Dutcher Family moved to Yakima, Washington. Dorothy completed her schooling and graduated from Yakima High School in 1937. She went on to attend St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing, where she received her Nursing Diploma in August of 1940. She started her nursing career in Seattle where she met her future husband, best friend, and love of her life, William R. Mannick. They were married on December 24th, 1941 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Seattle, Washington.
Housing was challenging during the war years and they were young newlyweds’, renting and moving several times in the Seattle area. Finally in 1956, they moved into the first home they ever owned in the Northgate area and started their family. Dorothy retired from her nursing career at Northgate General Hospital, where she worked from 1951 to 1977.
Dorothy was an avid gardener; growing flowers, herbs and vegetables. She was a skilled sewer and knitter, making many of her own clothes. While in Seattle, Dorothy was an active member of the Bethel Lutheran Church of Shoreline, participating in the “Pass it on Quilters” to support Lutheran World Relief.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents and siblings. She lost her husband of nearly 60 years, William, on January 4th, 2000. In 2005, Dorothy decided it was time to sell the home William and she shared, with many fond memories, and moved into a retirement home in Seattle. She later relocated to the Olympia area, where she resided until her passing.
Dorothy leaves behind her Son, Dennis Mannick of Port Orchard, Washington and Daughter, Linda (Mannick) Walsh of Grayland, Washington; and many loving extended family and friends.
A Memorial Committal Service will be held on Thursday, June 13th, 2013 at 1PM at Acacia Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 14951 Bothell Way NE, Seattle, Washington 98155.
Dorothy enriched every life she touched and her legacy will forever live on in our hearts.
