He was born August 1, 1952, the youngest child of Robert and Ida Long, in Milwaukee, WI. He was a avid reader and took summer road trips around the US with his parents, sister Sharon and brother Bob. He played in the band and swam for his high school team.
He graduated in 1975 from University of Wisconsin in Mining Engineering and moved to the “the Upper Peninsula” of Michigan to work for an iron mining company. He discovered he wanted to focus on the “people side” of work. He then pursued graduate degrees in engineering as well as industrial relations at University of Minnesota. During those years, his faith in Jesus Christ deepened and he served on staff with The Navigators college ministries. He made many lifelong friendships that he treasured.
In 1987, he began work at Weyerhaeuser as a Human Resources Manager in Oregon and then Washington state. In recent years he worked in HR and organization development with several technology firms in the Puget Sound area. Recruiting and building teams to work together for a shared goal was his passion.
Over the years, he enjoyed long distance running, hiking, skiing, and refereeing school sports. He climbed Mt. Rainier and participated in several “Seattle to Portland” Bicycle Classics.
In 1994, he married Diane Quammen and they were blessed with two children - Annelise and Katherine. He was an engaged and enthusiastic father who loved to plan trips and adventures, making wonderful memories for the family.
He celebrated 5 years of remission from cancer in 2012 and bicycled from Mukilteo, WA to Madison, WI. In 2014, he completed the route and bicycled from Madison, WI to the East Coast.
In 2015 he was diagnosed with cancer, now metastatic to the brain. Denny received surgeries and treatment at Swedish Neuroscience Institute, Providence Regional Medical Center, and Everett Clinic. His family is grateful for the physicians, nurses, rehab therapists, pharmacists, and social workers that provided excellent care over the years. His family is also thankful for the support of Providence Hospice in these recent weeks. Though many of his abilities declined, he remained gracious, loving, and appreciative.
Denny will be missed by wife Diane, daughters Annie and Katie; nieces Lynn (Mark) Mellantine, Shelby (Kyle) Poquette, and Stacy Mellantine; nephew Scott (Kylia) Kummer; and in-laws Mona, Linda, Janene and Todd (Ethel), Jacob (Lauren) and Aaron Quammen.
We are thankful for the support of so many friends and family who helped with meals, shopping, visits, and phone calls. Thank you so much for walking alongside us all.
