He was born in Moscow, Idaho on January 18, 1936 to John and June Gray, joining sisters Shannon and Jean, and brother Johnny. He graduated from Moscow High in 1953 then went to the University of Idaho in Moscow, graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He was recruited by Seattle City Light, moved to Seattle and worked for them for 41 years, retiring as Chief Engineer in 1999. While at City Light, he met Susan, who working in the Economics department. They married in 1964, then welcomed Sarah in 1966 and Sandi in 1968. He was the proud grandpa “Papa” to Michael (24) and Emily (22) Peterson.
He was loved by his family and friends for his kind and generous manner, taking care of those around him. He always traveled around with his toolbox, and helped out at his church on maintenance issues, taking care of everything around the house, and helping friends with fixing or building whatever they needed. He was rarely seen without a 3X5 card and mechanical pencil in his plaid shirt pocket, keeping track of his errands and tasks. He was a quiet and steady presence, but always ready for a good laugh. He was trustworthy and kept his word, which unfortunately meant honoring his off-handed remark about getting a cat when his daughters were in elementary school. That cat, Ginger, adored him and would start purring as soon as he entered the room.
His family feels so lucky to have him in their lives. He is survived by his wife, daughters, son-in-law Jerry Peterson, and grandchildren. He loved, was loved, and is loved deeply.
His funeral will be held on Sunday November 13, 2022 at 1pm at Christ Episcopal Church, at 4548 Brooklyn Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98105. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Dennis’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association.
