He enlisted in the army at the age of 17 to fight in World War two and made the military his career. Before the use of Radar, he was selected to be an observer because of his excellent stereoscopic vision and his ability to determine aircraft range. In the Korean War he was wounded, captured by the Chinese and held as a prisoner of war (POW).
He went through an officer candidate program and became one of few people to be commissioned as an officer through that program. He received the Korean Service metal, United Nations service metal, National Defense Service Metal, Army Commendation Metal, Armed forces Reserve Metal and the Purple Heart. His military service included the command of two Nike sites in the area, one in Bothell and one in Redmond.
He married Yolanda Uberti in May of 1944 and they were married for 67 years. In his role as military officer he was stationed in many areas in the states and in West Germany and in South Korea. He has two children, Jeff Montgomery (wife Rosi) and Jeannie Martin, (husband Mike). He also has grandchildren, Drew (wife Kia) and Mark Montgomery, and Michael and Jonathan Martin (wife Beth). He has 3 great grandchildren, Rachel, Keira and Naomi Martin.
He loved the Lord with all his heart and lived his life as a Soldier for Jesus. He taught adult Sunday School classes at Ballard Baptist Church for many years, and influenced generations of people with his kindness and beliefs.
He passed away in Duvall Washington from cancer at the age of 87, and will be missed by all who knew him.
Services will be held at Ballard Baptist Church on January 14th at 11 AM.
