April 10, 1942 – February 13, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Manthey “Marie” Smith, a beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and friend, on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at the age of 82. While we mourn her loss, we take comfort knowing she has been reunited with her cherished husband, Anthony B. Smith 1st.
Marie was born on April 10, 1942, in Atascadero, California, and later moved to Monterey County, where she built a loving home. She was a devoted daughter of George and Elvira and a cherished Wife and Mother. Marie leaves behind a legacy through her 9 children: George Taylor (Ellen), Larry Taylor (Suzanna), Cindy Calmus (Rob), Rhonda Mills (Mike), John Taylor, Deborah Taylor, Chris Taylor (Rhonda), Athena Smith-Perry (Anthony), and Anthony Smith 2nd (Shannon). She also leaves behind 29 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
One of Marie’s greatest joys was spending time with her cherished granddaughter, Aliza. Their special bond brought her immeasurable happiness, and the time they shared together will forever be treasured by those who witnessed their love.
A devoted Mother and foster parent, Marie poured love into everything she did, touching the lives of all who knew her. Her home was always filled with warmth, and she was known for her loving nature and giving spirit. She found great comfort in the company of her cats, who brought her joy throughout her life.
Over the past 20+ years, Marie faced many health challenges but remained determined, vibrant, and engaged with her family and community. Her feisty spirit, strength, and selflessness were some of her greatest qualities. She gave so much of herself to others, even when she had little to give, and that made her truly special.
Marie loved playing cards, board games, and capturing life’s moments through photography. Whether behind the camera or sharing a game night with family, her laughter was a constant in the lives of those around her. She had a knack for making every moment feel meaningful.
Her kindness and spunk led to many cherished friendships, including a special bond with her “Roomie,” Betty, affectionately known as “Thing 2.” Despite the pain she endured, Marie remained lively, generous, and always ready to share a laugh with anyone in need of a little joy.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, George Guches & Elvira Garcia, and her beloved husband, Anthony Smith 1st. Her legacy of love, strength, and kindness will continue to inspire all who knew her.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, followed by a Homegoing service on Friday, March 7, 2025, at 12:00 PM at Bayside Mortuary. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Loyal Order of Moose Monterey Lodge 876. Please join us in honoring the life of a woman whose love and kindness touched so many hearts.
