Shirley Jean Coker, age 87, of Richardson, Texas passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2023. She will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, Christian, and friend to all that knew and loved her. Shirley was born in Malakoff, Texas to Herbert Paul and Fannie Dee Yates.
Shirley grew up with her siblings in Malakoff. She had fond memories of attending school and playing sports, including baseball and volleyball. She was also a member of the school band and pep squad along with cheerleading her senior year. Shirley graduated from Malakoff high school in 1954. Shortly after she married the love of her life, Odell Coker. Together they had two children.
Shirley prided herself on being a homemaker. She would say her proudest moments were raising her 2 beautiful children to be the best they could be and for them to have gone on to enrich her with 4 wonderful grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
When not spending time with her family, Shirley enjoyed handcrafting. She painted, crocheted, scrapbooked, and handmade cards for every occasion. She also belonged to the Goodbar Senior Center in Mesquite for 12 years where she was an avid volunteer. She was eventually honored as the City of Mesquite’s Volunteer of the Year in 2008 to award her many years of service.
Shirley is survived by her children, Sharon Denise Moffett of Frisco, Texas, and Alex DeWayne Coker and Wife Cynthia of Lavon, Texas; Grandchildren, Sean Mayfield, Amantha Banks, Shayla Locklear, and Lauren Young; Great-grandchildren, Connor Mayfield, Kaelyn Mayfield, Ryan Mayfield, Elijah Young, Hannah Young, Ezra Young, Logan Locklear, and Josephine Locklear. She is also survived by her sister Peggy Thompson along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and many loving friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Herbert Paul and Fannie Dee Yates and her siblings, Cecil Yates, Dorothy Willis, Aaron Yates, Jack Yates, Joyce Crawford, Kenneth Yates, Mildred Hill, and Mickey Power
A visitation for Shirley will be held Monday, July 17, 2023 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at Roselawn Funeral Home, 1000 S Highway 175, Seagoville, TX 75159. A funeral service will occur Monday, July 17, 2023 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM, 1000 S Highway 175, Seagoville, TX 75159. A committal service will occur Monday, July 17, 2023 from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, 1000 S Highway 175, Seagoville, TX 75159.
