She was a resident of the Warsaw Community in Kaufman County for 60 years. She worked for Crandall ISD for many years, finally retiring at the age of 82.
Those who knew Ruby knew that her love for family was one of her most defining attributes. She often talked about how much her children and family meant to her, as her family was her proudest achievement in life. Ruby treasured the times that everyone could gather around her house while they enjoyed her delicious home cooking, as food is one of the ways she showed her love. Working in the school cafeteria for years also brought her lots of happiness, and she thoroughly found peace in ensuring any hungry kid had enough to eat. It was also appreciated by all of her grandkids who got the benefit of special treats from her when going through the lunch line. In addition to her love of family and helping others, Ruby could be found singing, playing guitar, and attending church services. She also enjoyed playing 42 with her friends and tending her garden. Those of us who were blessed to be touched by Ruby understand her existence and the imprint she left on our hearts will be forever with us.
Ruby is survived by her loving sister, Ethel Sherwood, her children, Ellen Yvonne Stockstill and Ruby Daphine Cooper, her daughter-in-law, Patty Sturdivant, her grandchildren, Lynette Smyth, Andy Smith, Audrey Torres, Jason Cooper, Amy Zbylut, Jaimi Stockstill, Leah Stockstill, Steven Sturdivant, Deborah Schultz, Pamela Truitt, Susanne Gallizzi, Janet Simpson, and Leslie Burgoyne. Other survivors include 29 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great-grandchildren, and countless other family and friends. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Jesse Boone Sturdivant, her son, Jesse Carl Sturdivant, and her step-children, Henry Sturdivant and Cathy Abbas.
