Ruby married Bennie Spencer on Christmas day in 1948 and moved to Hot Springs. They had one son, Lester in 1949 and one daughter, Shirley in 1953. Bennie was a pilot when they were married and they enjoyed flying.
Ruby and Bennie moved to Dallas, TX in 1960, then to Terrell in 2012. Bennie passed away in 2012 and Ruby became a resident of the Colonial Lodge Assisted Living in Terrell. They were members of Grace Baptist Church. Ruby loved bluegrass, gospel and country music. She also had a love for red birds, quilting, collecting rocks and writing poetry. One of her poems, “Jesus Answers Prayers” was printed in the book, “Wind In The Night” by the National Archives of Poetry. Ruby loved road trips and went to San Diego, San Antonio, St. Louis, Los Angeles, Memphis and Nashville, but her favorite trips were to the Houston area, Hot Springs and Mena, Arkansas to visit family.
Ruby was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Bennie Spencer, parents John and Rowena Murphy, siblings Trulla May Murphy, Mary V. Bain, Walter “Sonny” Murphy and Orebra Hammer.
She is survived by children: Lester and wife Sandy Spencer, Shirley and husband Craig Montgomery; siblings: George Murphy, J.R. “Jake” Murphy, Charlotte “Cissy” Mayfield, Jo Hammond and Fern Knight. Three grandchildren: Jason Allen, Jennifer Starkey and John Montgomery, thirteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson and numerous nieces and nephews that will miss her dearly.
