Mike grew up in Crescent, Oklahoma where he played football, basketball, and baseball and graduated from Crescent High School in 1969. He was in the U.S. Navy from 1971 -1973 as a Boatswain mate on the USS HITCHTI (ATF-103) where he visited Vietnam, Hong Kong, Guam, and the Philippines. In 1970, Mike moved to Dallas to attend Devry Tech and later started work with South Western Bell as a phone installer. He retired from AT&T in 2001. Mike founded Combine Cabinets where he fulfilled his passion of woodworking for friends and family.
In July 1971 he met his wife, Sharon Schmitz of 49 years at Club Schmitz. They married in June 1974 and moved to Combine, Texas. They had two children, Amy and Sam. They lost their daughter Amy in 1994. Sam went on to college at A&M in College Station and is now owner of an Allstate Agency. Sam married Aubrea and they have six boys.
Mike was especially active in the community. He volunteered as a coach, President of the Athletic Booster Club, Volunteer Fireman in Combine, Crandall School board member, and President of the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. His love of golf kept him golfing with friends at least twice a week until he secured his “Hole In One” at Rusted Rail Golf course in 2022. He was active in St Martin of Tours as an usher, handyman, and member of the Knights of Columbus where he was a 4th Degree Knight.
He loved and played well. He enjoyed family time, traveling, having a cold beer with friends, telling a dirty joke that would have everyone laughing, riding his motorcycle, driving his Porsche with the top down, swinging a golf club, and flying a plane.
