Some of my fondest memories of my mom are of her taking me to feed the ducks at White Rock Lake and playing candyland with her.  

Also she was a great cook! She always made a big meal from scratch every day and it was always enough to feed all of us. That didn’t stop us from eating as fast as we could so we could get seconds. As a kid I could trade just a bite of one of her homemade burritos for any kids dessert at school lunch. 

Being the youngest I got dragged around with her shopping. Clothing stores were rough but the worst was the Fabric Store!!! Let me tell you there is not much for a boy to do at a fabric store. Going through all the button drawers only entertains for so long so I think I spent most of the time asking, “Can we go yet!?” 

These are just a few memories of the woman I called mom. I love you mom and I will miss you. 

Mom was one I could always talk to.  When I talked about work she had no clue but would smile and nod her head as if she followed what I was saying. She always made me feel better. She was one that got my humor. We would talk and laugh for hours. El Fenix was OUR place. Oh the memories there. 
Mom was a shopper. That woman could shop. We used to tease her that she had to look at every single thing in the store when she went in. When she went to buy groceries, she would be gone for days... well more like 3 hours but felt like days.  
Mom was the wisest, strongest, most loving woman I've ever known.  She always had a smile for you no matter what was going on in her life.  She always had time to listen to you and encourage you or to speak into your life. She was my best friend and will be missed so much.  I am thankful I had two years to care for her and be with her. I am thankful I was there for her last breath. I love you, Mom. I will see you again one day and we will both laugh and dance in the Lord's presence.  

Mom was the one when Jason and I would go out and party in our teenage years who was awaiting at the end of the night. We would go out with friends and drink and get stupid.  Dumb kids. When it was time to go home we'd know mom might be waiting. Sure enough every time she's  sitting there on the couch by the door to our bedrooms. She would say 'love y'all. Give me a kiss goodnight.' Jason and I would fight to be the last one through because the first person would have to kiss her. She would smell you and know exactly every thing you did that night. 'You've been drinking and smoking.' Worst thing you want to hear  from your mom. 'No mom your wrong.'  Your right mom. She had a blood hound nose. I hated that nose. It got to the point when we went  out I tried gum, mouth wash and other things to cover my breath but she always smelled it out. Going home was like going through the Gestapo in World War 2.

By the way if you got stopped by the Gestapo you had to sit down and wait for the head SS OFFICER (dad) for a hour or so lecture. That sucked. But dumb Jason and I would do it over and over; fighting to get by the Gestapo  first and not be tortured.

Mom was the most strongest woman I've known. I respect her and she was smart and soft. They don't make them like that anymore.


When I was very young I played sick one time because I was having so many problems in school. It worked and I stayed home and played all day long. I thought that this was the greatest deal in the world. All I had to do was play sick, stay home and play with my toys all day long. Much better than school. But I had to be convincing with illness.  I became a expert with sick systems.  Cough, don't feel good. Rub my forehead and eyes. I became a professional  sick kid and it worked. I stayed home allot and played all day. I was a child and forgot one important fact. If you start off miserable you need to play miserable all day. I was having fun all day every day I was pretending to be sick. One morning I played sick again to stay home and have fun. Mom fell for it again. This was the best ploy. I found this great loop hole in school. I loved this loop hole and obviously  no one can tell the truth. I'm fake coughing, head hot, rubbed my eyes so I looked sick. Mom said you look sick so stay home. I have freedom from school again. Hallelujah.  Perfect. I'll play all day by myself!!! I'm so smart yayyyy

Then mom said you're so sick you will need to stay in bed today. Don't get out of bed. Whattttt???  She said again leave the door open and I'll check on you. You stay in bed today. I stayed in that bed all day and was bored out of my mind. I thought this must be a mistake. I tried being sick the next day to play all day but again mom said I had to stay in bed all day. That was the most boring days I ever remember stuck in bed. The next day I was happy to go to school

She never confronted me just made sick time at home suck


Best memory is of mom taking me and Jason as lil kids from CFNI under 35E to the mall on the other side. She would shop and Jason and I would play all over that mall. Then she would take us by the hands and walk us home. She would make us a sandwich and chips and we would listen to the guy on the news. Famous news caster but his name eludes me. Then Jason and I would take a nap before everyone else came home.

Mom always insisted on our young friends giving her a hug. It was fun to watch them squirm. 

I remember a Christmas somewhere around 2004 when mom gave each of us kids a present that we were to open at the same time.  Inside each box was a t-shirt that said "I'm Mom's Favorite". We all laughed about it but secretly we each knew we were her favorite. Mom was amazing that way. Later in the nursing home I asked her one day "I'm your favorite right Mom?" She replied "of course" then winked. 

Betty and I remember Sis. Joyce as the welcoming, motherly and supportive example of a Godly wife. Those who listened to her gained wisdom and humour.  She and her husband were GREAT mentors in our lives. 

May the seeds of their faith in God manifest great harvest seasons in the lives of their children, grand children and many generations to come.
