Dr. Victor Gray Herring, III, 86, passed away in Scottsdale, AZ on August 17, 2018. He was born on September 21, 1931, in Goldsboro, North Carolina to Victor Gray and Virginia Babb Herring. Victor grew up and attended school in Goldsboro. He was a proud Eagle Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow. He attended college, and then medical school at the University of North Carolina, graduating in 1956. Victor went on to serve as Captain in the United States Air Force in Ramstein, Germany. Following military service, he continued training with pediatric residencies in New York at the Presbyterian Babies Hospital affiliated with Columbia University and at Grace-New Haven Community Hospital with the Yale University School of Medicine.
After completing his medical training, Victor practiced pediatric medicine in Tarboro, North Carolina. There he met Virginia (Ginny), his wife of 51 years, and they were married in 1967. While Victor remained in private practice in Tarboro for 20 years, he also served as Mayor of Tarboro for six years. During this time, Tarboro was named an All-American City. He was active and involved in the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Tarboro Historical Society, and Friends of the Library. He was devoted to his church and served on the vestry for Calvary Episcopal Parish.
Victor continued in public service when the family moved to Arizona in 1984. There, he joined the Indian Health Service, first as a practicing physician, and later in administration. He retired in 2010. Additionally, Victor was a surveyor for the Joint Commission in the U.S. and U.K in the later years of his career. He enjoyed and appreciated this time to travel and broaden his career in medicine. He supported his church, St. Barnabas on the Desert Episcopal Parish, by serving on the vestry. Victor traveled on several mission trips in the U.S. and to the Dominican Republic. He developed a new hobby late in life with his study and research of Asian artifacts. Victor was a lifelong student with many and varied interests.
Victor was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Robert Babb Herring. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Eason Herring, his daughters, Laura V.E.H. Crandall (Raymond), Sarah G.M.H. Reckard (Christopher), and Catherine S.H. Butterweck (James), and his grandchildren, Hailey V.L. Crandall, Owen G. Crandall, and Phinney G. Reckard. Victor is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Victor devoted a lifetime to medicine and public service. He was loved and admired by family and friends alike.
A memorial service will be held at St. Barnabas on the Desert, Scottsdale, AZ, on September 8, 2018, at 3pm, with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Victor’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, https://www.alz.org/.
