Truman was a memorable “True Man”, known for his Faith in Christ, Love of Family and Friends, and Love of Country. His love of music, as well as his dry wit and sense of humor, were always present. He was also deeply analytical and loved numbers and puzzles. Well known for his harmonica-playing skills, he was happiest when spontaneously pulling the harmonica out of his pocket to serenade someone with a tune. He loved to play for his Church, and once won the Amateur Night competition on a cruise of the Panama Canal with his wife and friends. Also, an accomplished ping-pong player, he won the Gold Medal in the Senior Olympics Ping Pong Tournament; an experience which always made him chuckle in bewilderment as to how it came to be.
Truman and his cherished wife of almost 66 years, Elaine Carlisle Nall, were true partners in life. Their unity was transparently available for all to see, and inspirational to many for its commitment and joy. He was a devoted and loving Family Man. His adoration of his beloved wife, Elaine, and endless commitment to the care and nurturing of his family was apparent to all who knew him. He was a much loved and admired true gentleman.
Truman was born in Norwood, Missouri, on August 2, 1927. Raised by strong Christian parents, and the youngest of 5 children, Truman was an outstanding student and athlete, and an active participant in all aspects of Norwood’s Missouri lifestyle. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 and joined the WWII forces at the tail end of the war. Following his release from the Navy, Truman graduated from Drury College in Springfield, Missouri. On a trip to visit his sister and brother-in-law in Abilene, Texas, he met his future bride, Elaine Carlisle, thru a mutual friend while attending Church services. He then enlisted in the Air Force Officer Training, and became an active participant serving his Country in the Korean Conflict. Following his completion of Officer Candidate School, he returned to Abilene in time for Elaine to pin his 2nd Lieut Bars on him one day and get married the next. Throughout his life, Truman frequently expressed his honor at being able to be part of the military and serve his Country with honor. Following his release from the Air Force, Truman and Elaine moved back to Abilene, where Truman began his employment with Humble Oil (now Exxon). While in Abilene, their son was born, and later, after moving to Houston, their daughter Vinita Nall Johnson was born. While in Texas, Truman also obtained his MBA from University of Houston. They were later transferred to Phoenix, Arizona. After leaving Humble Oil, Truman eventually came to work for Maricopa County in the Financial Management Department where he found his career happiness, and from which he later retired.
Active in several Churches through the years, Truman and Elaine enjoyed participating in various Church Groups, and, following their retirement, happily began to travel with dear friends and fellow InJoy Members to various places throughout the world. They loved their time with Family, Friends, and especially with each other.
Truman was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elaine C. Nall. He is survived by his son (daughter-in-law and grandson), his daughter Vinita Nall Johnson, and many nieces, nephews, and one brother-in-law. His family and many friends will miss him but take comfort in knowing that he is at peace, and with his Lord and Savior, and Elaine once again. There will be a graveside service held on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, at 10:00 am.
The family wishes to express gratitude to The Gardens of Scottsdale, and to Hospice of the Valley, for the respectful and loving care they provided. The Medical, Nursing and Support Staff at The Gardens were wonderful and caring, and we are so grateful to them for the loving care they provided to our beloved Truman (Daddy).
