Sonja Maria Weaver

Sonja M. Weaver, 93 of Gilbert, AZ (formerly of Tempe, AZ) passed away peacefully on June 23, 2022, to again be with her late husband Karl and our Heavenly Father. Sonja was born on July 25, 1928 in Stuttgart Germany. She was an only child to Oskar and Anna Sippel. She was blessed to have a wonderful childhood till the events of growing up in Germany during World War II changed her life. She survived a bombing of her school, leaving her buried in rubble for three days.

After the war, because of her German-English language skills she was fortunate to gain employment with the US Army command in Stuttgart as a translator, this is where she met the love of her life, Karl. They married and began their 60-plus year journey through life together. Sonja became a US Citizen in 1956, she traveled to many locations in the United States and Germany. During this time, as a US Army wife, she volunteered to lead many civil charity organizations within the US Military’s family community, her biggest accomplishment was the establishment of a scholarship fund for high school seniors at the American High School in Kaiserslautern Germany. Returning from Germany, she and Karl settled initially in Scottsdale AZ in 1968, then moved to Tempe and finally in the later years of her life in Assisted Living in Gilbert AZ. Karl passed away in 2013, leaving her as a widow.

Another of her many accomplishments was volunteering to lead and instruct a group of senior women in water and floor aerobics. She planned for facilities to do the exercises and lead the group of upwards of 20 women to remain youthful in their older years, she did this for almost twenty years, still leading the group well into her 70’s. Sonja was very active with the New Apostolic Church. She and Karl were instrumental in bringing God’s word to many fellow members. Sonja also had a great love for animals, cherishing her dogs and was a strong supporter of Animal Rescue groups and the Humane Society.

Sonja is survived by her son Edward (Karen) Weaver, daughter Pamela Weaver, granddaughters Angela Weaver, and Christina (Matt) Stone and great grandson Lincoln Stone. Sonja will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to know and love her.

Visitation will be held July 5, 2022 from 9:00 to 11:00 with funeral service at 11:00 at Green Acres Mortuary and Cemetery, 401 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale AZ
