Daughter of Peter and Cora (Lura) Teig, Nadine was born on July 31, 1930 in Roland, IA youngest of four siblings. Her sister Pearl West, 97, resides in Oskaloosa, IA; Pearl’s twin brother, Earl, and their elder brother, Carrol, predeceased their sisters.
Nadine graduated valedictorian of Roland High School in 1948 where she was also a stand-out basketball player.
In 1949 Nadine married Ervin (Swede) Smith of Seymour IA. They began their family of four in Belmond, IA but in 1962 they moved to Scottsdale to help manage and grow Smitty’s groceries. After Swede died in 1974, Nadine was married to Ralph K. Huss from 1975 until his death in 2001.
Along with her love and care for family and friends Nadine celebrated a rich life as music lover, avid reader, unsurpassed correspondent, frequent hostess, sports enthusiast, world traveler, prodigious collector and consummate homemaker. So that other women may enjoy the same opportunities afforded to her, Nadine actively promoted the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) and served two terms as president of its Scottsdale chapter.
Nadine is survived by her son Bruce Smith and his wife Wanda, their daughter Allison Butler and her husband Matt and their five-month-old daughter all of Denver, CO. Their son Gregory Smith and his wife Rachael, their four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son live in Seattle, WA. Nadine’s daughter Deborah (Smith) Luther and her partner Mike Tortora live in St Augustine, FL.
Ralph’s daughter Terre Sweeney and her husband Jack and their three children, six grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren have steadfastly included Nadine as their own.
Nadine will be interred at Green Acres cemetery in Scottsdale. In anticipation of her eulogy the family invites remembrances of Nadine be shared to this site. In lieu of flowers the family invites donations to PEO’s Program for Continuing Education.
