Vern, as everybody knew him, passed from this life in Mesa, on February 25, at the age of 81. He was born in Newdale, Idaho on September 2, 1933. Shortly after his birth, his Mother returned to their home in Strawberry, Arizona. He was born into a ranching family and grew up a cowboy. He shoed his first horse at age 8, and was drawing a mans pay by the age of 12. After the death of his Father at age 14, the family returned to Idaho, where Vern attended high school. Drafted into the Army after the Korean War ended, he spent a year there and was honorably discharged in 1955. He returned to cowboying for several years in Camp Verde, then entered college and earned an engineering degree from ASU. He entered the construction industry, and worked for PKS in California. He then ran a redi-mix outfit in Lake Havasu City, that supplied the concrete for the London Bridge project. He later worked as a superintendent for Hunter Contracting, finishing his career with the City of Mesa. He was a lifelong outstanding cowboy, award winning horseman, packer, and dutch oven camp cook. He is survived by his lovely wife Betty, son Clark, daughters Carolynn and Julie, stepson Michael, stepdaughter Amber, 9 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. Services will be held at 10:30 am, Friday March 6, at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd., Phoenix, Arizona.
