Vernon L. VerMaas, 88, of Scottsbluff, died Sunday, March 27, 2016 at the Western Nebraska Veterans Home Assisted Living facility in Scottsbluff. At his request, cremation has taken place at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Home Crematory. A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 1, 2016 at the First Christian Church in Sidney with Dr. Curtiss P. Davis, Pastor officiating. Vernon was born April 6, 1927 at Firth, Nebraska to Herb and Cornelia (DeVries) VerMaas. He received his early education at Hickman School, graduating from Hickman High School. He enlisted in the United States Army on Jan. 3, 1951 and served as a cook until his honorable discharge on Dec. 16, 1952.
Vernon was united in marriage to Ramona Brownlow on Sept. 22, 1961 in Lincoln and made their home throughout rural areas in Nebraska before settling in Sidney, Nebraska in 1980.
Vernon was a long standing member of the Elks Lodge. He was a Federal Trapper. His hobbies included raising Appaloosa horses, hunting, fishing, Cornhuskers, NASCAR, cooking, gardening, singing in the church choir, and making friends. He loved his little dogs and collected eagles and wolves.
Vernon is survived by his son Randy VerMaas of Sioux Falls, S.D.; sister Irma Karnes of Denver, Colo.; sisters-in-law Donna Robinson of Gering and Waneta Savage of Scottsbluff; brothers-in-law Jim Karnes of Colo. and Glenn Savage of Scottsbluff; cousins Jim Miller of Bayard and Virgil VerMaas of Hickman; nieces and nephews Kim and Lori Thiel of Houston, TX, David, Susie, and Joseph Thiel of Minatare, Matthew, Yurlanda, Torri, and Ben Thiel of IA, Brandy and Justin Schaneman of Wyo., Jason Thiel of Mo., and Shannon Hicks of S.C.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ramona; son Terry; brother Albert; and sister-in-law Amy Shimp.
