Harry was born on May 21, 1922, to Grace and Harry Lynn of Jersey City, NJ. Harry was born a redhead, full of spunk and energy, with a love for hard work. Before joining the US Army, Harry worked as a stock clerk in New Jersey, learning the sales trade and customer service. He started in the carpet business as an apprentice in 1940. Out of patriotism and a love for his country, Harry enlisted in the US Army Signal Corps on October 29, 1942, in New York City.
His work ethic shined bright in his service, earning recognition as one of the top three Morse Code Operator across all the military branches during World War II. Harry fondly recalled his time in service, including many stories about shipping across the Atlantic with the US Navy, marching German prisoners-of-war over rough terrain, and seeing Winston Churchill in a pub in London. Harry was scheduled to ship out with 150 soldiers to Normandy Beach for D-Day on June 6, 1944, but his unit was left behind due to a miscommunication. Harry served under detached service with the English Army, under General Montgomery.
Following his military service, Harry attended the University of Denver where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics. He then returned to sales as a travelling salesman for William Volker & Co., servicing Colorado, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nebraska.
Harry met Teresa in July 1952 in Lakewood, CO at Teresa’s father’s farm over her horse, Yankee Thunder. They were married in a ceremony in Lakewood, CO, on October 19, 1954. They then moved to Scottsbluff in 1955, where he continued to work for William Volker & Co., where he earned one of the top salesman positions in the company. In 1962, Harry and Ralph Kennedy bought Taylor Furniture. They enjoyed many years running the store together. In 1976, Harry and Ralph split the business in two: Taylor Furniture and Taylor Warehouse Carpet. Harry’s son, Kenneth, then entered the family business full time in 1980 and continued their father son partnership until 2005. At 84 years old, Harry finally retired after 66 years in flooring sales.
Harry and Teresa raised three children: Harry III, Kenneth, and Sherri. After their children left home, Harry and Teresa lived in love until Teresa’s passing in 2014, shortly after celebrating 60 years of marriage.
In the last decade of his life, Harry enjoyed spending time with his family and was well known as a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Harry loved gardening, keeping his yards manicured and vibrant, even winning his coveted Golden Spade award in 2008. His love for gardening continued until his death as he was preparing for this spring’s yard. Besides gardening, he stayed active late in life by going to coffee with his friends, keeping up with sports and politics, and playing with his great-grandchildren.
Harry was known for his witty sense of humor and was always ready to give a quip or a joke to light up the room. His family could always count on Harry to put a smile on their faces with his personality. Harry, along with his late wife, also donated much of their time and money to encourage research in search of a cure and provide support for individuals with heart disease and diabetes.
Harry is predeceased by his parents, Father Harry L. Lynn, Sr. and Mother Grace, Wife Teresa; and Son Harry III. Daughter, Sherri, passed away alongside her father, Harry.
