Gregory Greg Cardwell

His funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2014, at Central Church of Christ in Gering with Pastor Lyle Hinebauch officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff. Greg was an avid Husker fan. As per his wishes, please wear casual Husker attire.

Friends may visit from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A memorial has been established for Kendra’s College Fund. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.dugankramer.com

Greg was born May 4, 1962, in Seward, Nebraska. He was the son of Richard and Myrna Stieber. He grew up in Lincoln, graduating from Lincoln Northeast High School. After graduating from high school, Greg moved to western Nebraska where he attended Chadron State College. He graduated with a BA Degree in History and Political Science. After graduating college he made his home in Chadron where he soon met his “lovely” wife of 23 years, Kimberly (Avolio) Cardwell. They were married on June 14, 1991. To this union two children were born, son Cameron Cardwell, 22, and daughter, Kendra Cardwell, 17.

Greg was a family man with a strong faith in God. He always said, “God first. Family second.” and he lived by this motto. Greg was very involved with is children’s activities. He was an assistant Cub Scout Master and 4-H volunteer leader. Every year at fair you would see Greg with his pig board in hand guiding pigs in and out of the show ring. He loved his 4-H time with his kids and family. Greg was a member of Central Church of Christ and a youth sponsor. He looked forward to the annual trip to Winter Whitewash.

Greg loved the outdoors. One of his favorite activities was camping. He and his family spent much time camping in the summer. One of his greatest joys was teaching his wife the joy of tent camping. He looked forward to the Hansen family reunions and camping at the Scotts Bluff County Fair each year.

Greg loved children. There was never a child who walked through the door that Greg did not welcome with open arms. He was a Reach Out Foster Care Parent for five years. He loved every child he met. He was a very social and giving man. He never knew a stranger and would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He was loved by all. At the time of his death, he worked at Schwan’s Food Service. He was known and loved by many as the Schwan’s Man.

He is survived by his wife, Kim; children, Kendra and Cameron, and Cameron’s girlfriend, Dana Anderson; mother, Myrna Stieber of Lincoln; brothers, Marty Cardwell and his friend Betty Shuck of North Bend and Barry Cardwell and his friend Judy Pitoniak of Columbia, Missouri; in-laws, Gary and Ruby Kuxhausen, Michele Kuxhausen, Randy (Kathy) Avolio all of Scottsbluff and Terri Kopsky-Cardwell of Phoenix, Arizona; special friend who he called “his other son,” Brandon Ball; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and loved ones.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Velma Hansen; and father, Richard Stieber.
