Ginger was born on March 5, 1949, to Monroe and Wille Belle Fowlkes, the baby of 9 kids, and grew up in the Mitchell area. She and her brother, Tim, could be found playing cowboys or Lone Ranger or making up their own games.
Ginger was one smart cookie, she did very well in school in Mitchell, Nebraska, and was active in band. It was in high school that she met the love of her life, Gary Weis. He knew that she was a smart cookie too, so while he would work as a cook at the Arrow Head, she would do his homework.
Gary and Ginger married in June 1966. A year later welcomed their daughter, Christi. Son, Scott joined the little family four years later.
Ginger had may hobbies including genealogy, painting and drawing (in which she was extremely talented), music, and especially reading. She loved going to the library book sales and finding treasures and would tote her bags of books home to lovingly place them in her own extensive library.
She was also active in the First Baptist Church before they moved away, singing in the choir, leading an exercise class, and serving on several boards and committees.
Gary’s work took them to North Platte, Omaha, and Colorado. No matter where they were, all were welcome. Family, friends, and neighbors, and there were always bonus kids aplenty, no one ever went hungry or thirsty, if you did it was your own fault. She loved entertaining and having family and friends around for deck parties, holidays, and Husker parties, or just stopping by to have a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. She was always ready to have fun and be sill and have a good laugh.
But first and foremost, for her was her family, her husband and children, her grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and great greatgrandchildren. She tried to be at every concert, play, sporting event, and special events that she could. Gram, as all her grandkids called her, loved spending time with her grandkids and would take them to movies and museums and play games and read books.
We will miss her so very much. She was a strong, independent woman who tried to instill those values in her children and grandchildren. Little Rambo as her son used to call her, was small but mighty. She used to tell us that dynamite came in small packages.
She is survived by her loving husband, Gary; daughter, Christi (Brad Childs) Weis; son, Scott (Racheal); grandchildren, Joe (Jessica) Weis and Nick (Lanna Belk) Childs, Crystal (Fred) Garrity, Cheyenne (Tommy Martin) Weis, Cameron Weis; greatgrandchildren, Lila, Tennysee, Addyson, Stefyn, Chrystopher, Logyn, and Trinity; and a great great-grandchildren, Solana and Drezak. Sisters, Linda Ockinga and Doris DeOllos, and brother, Tim (Tammy) Fowlkes; sister-in-law Kathy Fowlkes; brother-in-law Dennis Weis and sister-in-law, Barb Weis, and “sons”, Bill Mabin, Kevin Bewley, and Corey Fisher, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She is preceded by many family members who were there to welcome her home.
Per her request, cremation has taken place, and her ashes will be scattered at a later date. But in the meantime, she would like us all to party in her honor and celebrate her life and raise a glass, and so we would ask you to join us in the spring to do just that, and she’ll be there in spirit loving every moment of it.
