Gerardo L. Medina was born on October 3, 1925, in Villa Hidalgo, Jalisco, Mexico, to Fulgencio and Timotea Medina. In 1949, he married Guadalupe Herrera in San Miguel, Texas. Together, they raised 10 children: 3 boys and 7 girls. Unfortunately, in February of 2019, he lost his wife, Guadalupe, after 70 years of marriage, and his son, Jesse Medina, in June of the same year.
In 1957, the family made their way to Nebraska, and made Mitchell their life-long home. Coming to America from Mexico, they knew the challenges they faced, but they were determined, so they spent years studying together, and in 1973, they earned their U.S. citizenship.
Gerardo was a hard worker that made providing for his family a priority. He did everything from working as a migrant worker to a hired hand on local farms, planting and irrigating crops. During the winter, he would work for G.W. Sugar Factory. Gerardo never stopped working. At 87, he was still doing what he loved best, which was irrigating and other farm work.
He is survived by his children, Gloria (Bill) Best of Lincoln, Nebraska, Sylvia (Tad) Sims of Chiefland, Florida, Emilio Medina of Wildwood, Missouri, Lucy Medina of Pipe Creek, Texas, Lupe (Tod) Buckingham of Omaha, Nebraska, Toni Kerns of Los Angeles, California, Yolanda Medina of Lincoln, Nebraska, Danny (Jody) Medina of Woodbridge, Virginia, Patty (Brian) Marchitello of Cibolo, Texas; daughter-in-law, Katharine Medina of Mitchell, Nebraska; 15 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
Gerardo is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Guadalupe; his two brothers; sister, Petra; and his two sons, Luis and Jesse Medina.
