Cherished husband of Kim Kelly Harriman, and loving father to their children: John “Jake” Kelly Harriman of Sandwich, and Annie Kelly Harriman (Shane Pacheco) of South Weymouth. Nate faced three cancer diagnoses and treatments over the course of 11 years, yet forged ahead as a devoted Dad and husband, always worried first about the impact of his illnesses on his family. With all the indignities that cancer brings, Nate carried on with immense grace and his loving spirit prevailed.
“Sweet” may well be the word used most often to describe Nate, and appropriately so. Nate will most be remembered for his gentle, loving, and loyal spirit. He judged no one. A giver by nature, Nate was quick to extend offers of help, and did so quietly. An old friend once said that Nate was perhaps the only person he knew that was “entirely without guile.” Nate’s family will forever treasure the legacy of his goodness, humility, and commitment to doing the right thing.
Nate loved nature, calling it his “church,” and it is fitting that he first met Kim at Walden Pond. He loved spending time in his garden and biking in his beautiful community - something he never took for granted. He was a hungry learner, never without a few books in progress, and known to dream of the additional degrees and careers that he might one day pursue.
Born in Springfield, MA, and raised in Agawam, he was the beloved son of the late Claudia (Fulton) and Robert Harriman. Nate was a graduate of UMass Lowell, and received his Master of Science in Finance from the Brandeis University International Business School. He spent the last 17 years as a senior programmer/analyst in the Supervision, Regulation, and Credit division of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and was previously employed as a financial analyst at EMD Serono, and the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
In addition to his wife and children, Nate is survived by his loving brothers, David Harriman and his wife, Cindy, of Mesa, Arizona and Michael Harriman of Holyoke, MA; his dear aunt, Susan Raymond of Anderson, California; cousins Cathryn Stanley and her husband, Glynne, of Biddeford, ME; Tim Fulton of Paradise, California; sisters-in-law, Shay Mitchell of Harwich, MA, Kenna Liatsos of Orleans, MA; brother-in-law, John Kelly and his wife, Barbara, of Plymouth, MA; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He was adored by his late mother-in-law, Evelyn Ingalls Murphy, and was deeply pained by the recent loss of beloved brother-in-law, Leo Liatsos. Nate was also very grateful for his “cancer buddies” with whom he felt a bond of brotherhood, and for Frank McCaffrey who was such a support to them all.
Special thanks to the palliative care and hospice teams of NVNA and Hospice for their skill and commitment to Nate’s care for more than a year and to the extraordinary staff at the Pat Roche Hospice Home who cared for him in his final few days.
A visitation will take place on Tuesday September 5, 2023 from 4pm-8pm at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday September 6, 2023 at 10am at the United Church of Christ Norwell 460 Main Street, Norwell, MA.
