Born in Antigo, Wisconsin to the late Dryden and Marion (Maloney) Piatt, Mary Lu was a graduate of P.J. Jacobs High School in Stevens Point, WI. After marrying Peter, they moved to the Milwaukee area and eventually went on to live in their forever home in Cohasset, MA. Mary Lu earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Northeastern University. She then started her career as the office manager for Cohasset Colonial Furniture Company. Once in Cohasset, Mary Lu became an active community volunteer, and over the years served at the Cohasset High School Library, the Paul Pratt Memorial Library, Cohasset Central Cemetery, and Cohasset Council on Aging, as well as knitting shawls for cancer treatment centers with St. Anthony’s church group.
Mary Lu was an exceptionally gifted and creative craftsperson. She was quite skilled at quilting, Chinese brush stroke painting, sewing, knitting, needlepoint, furniture finishing, and home décor. She loved sharing her talents and creations with her extended family and many friends. Mary Lu loved traveling to experience new places and cultures. She was also an avid reader, crossword puzzle master and a Boston Red Sox fan. Above all, Mary Lu enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was loving, generous and kind, and will be greatly missed by many.
She was the devoted mother of Laurie Zastrow of Hull, Michelle Sullivan (Kevin) of Acton, ME, and Lisa Pritchett (Gary) of Waterford, ME.
Cherished grandmother of Amy Johnson of Scituate, Kathleen Parsons of Lowell and Jessica Hasenoehrl of Kirkland, WA.
Great-grandmother to Megan, Kelly, Ruby, Opal and Pearl.
Loving sister to John (Dorothy) Piatt of Wisconsin Rapids, WI, Catherine (Dave) Thomas of Milwaukee, WI, as well as the late Marjorie (Robert) Garlick and Claire Piatt.
Sister-in-law to the late Velma (William) Frizzell, Lillian (Fred) Upthagrove, Lucille (Charles) Taylor, Myron (Bernice) Kjer, Michael (Romie) Kjer, Carla (Walter) Leppen, Dorey (Buck) Ellett, Mildred (Anthony) Woyak, Leonard Kjer, and Donna (Chester) Trzebiatowski.
She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of the Pat Roche Hospice Home for their compassion and care during Mary Lu’s stay with them.
Visitation Wednesday, October 12, 2022 from 4-8 PM at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate, MA. Funeral Mass on Thursday, October 13, 2022 at 11 AM at St. Anthony’s Church, 2 Summer Street, Cohasset, MA. Interment to follow at Cohasset Central Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mary Lu’s name can be made to the Paul Pratt Memorial Library in Cohasset or Cohasset’s South Shore Arts Center.
