Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Helen T. (Bryson) Doherty.
Maddie grew up in Scituate and graduated from Scituate High School, class of 1972. She went on to graduate from Bridgewater State University in 1978. For many years, she worked in banking in Boston. Maddie then went on to work at Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Hingham, from which she recently retired.
Maddie enjoyed traveling, including taking cruises to Hawaii and Alaska, and traveling to Europe many summers. As much as she enjoyed traveling, she also loved spending time in her beloved hometown of Scituate. Her weekends were spent shopping and going out to lunch with her sisters. She had lifelong friends from growing up in Scituate and was always making great friends along the way. She was a fixture at every family party and always made the best homemade baked goods, such as her famous mint brownies, strawberry shortcake, and Grammy’s chocolate cake.
Sister of Joseph L. Doherty (Maryann) Doherty, of West Falmouth; Mary Beth (Francis) Sullivan, of Duxbury; Edward F. (Chris Dion) Doherty, of Scituate; Robert C. (Kelly) Doherty, of Scituate; John J. Doherty, of Norwell; Mary Carol Doherty, of Scituate; and Chrissy (Chris) Braga, of Duxbury. Maddie is also the sister-in-law of Marie Doherty of Marshfield.
A devoted and loving aunt to Kate Clevenger, Joseph L. Doherty, Jr., Patrick Sullivan, Christopher Sullivan, Alison Doherty, Jack Doherty, Leah Doherty, Conor Doherty, Sean Braga, Ainsley Doherty, Elizabeth Doherty, Colin Braga, Molly Doherty, Shay Doherty, and Lauren Braga. She is also a great-aunt to Seth Doherty and Leo Clevenger.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 from 4-8 PM at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate. Funeral Mass on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at 10 AM at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent Street, Scituate Harbor. Interment to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Meeting House Lane, Scituate Harbor.
Maddie was especially appreciative of the wonderful and caring staff at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be made to support Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
