John P. Horgan peacefully passed away on Sunday night in his home surrounded by his family and friends. John is survived by his wife of 27 years, Donna Ruffner. Son to the late Michael and Margaret Horgan. John is cherished by his four children Jillian Beck, and her husband Craig and son Francis, Brendan, Connor, and Trevor. Beloved brother to Ann Herrman, Katherine Fahy, her husband Gerard, and Michael, his wife Jeanne. He will also be remembered by his brothers-in-law Peter J. Ruffner, his wife margarita and Richard Ruffner.
John was born in Blackburn, England on August 24th, 1949. He and his family would spend summers in Ireland with their family. In 1959, the family boarded a ship and sailed to America. After landing in the United States of America the family spent six months in New York before moving up to Boston. They spent many years in the house on Bronfield Rd. In Somerville before John and his three siblings had their own families and went off in their own directions.
Prior to his time as an elite wallpaper installation technician in the South Shore, John worked as a teamster driving around New England for more than 10 years. After learning how to wallpaper, he quickly took his talents to his home of Scituate and the surrounding towns. John has hung wallpaper in homes from the north shore to the cape, Beacon Hill to Wesley, and all in between.
John was not only a father to his four children but to the community. Between years of coaching little league baseball, travel basketball, and the like, John mentored and taught many young men and women. Neither his children nor anyone who shared a team with them were immune to the special form of coaching John used. John was a mentor to all on his teams and challenged them to improve through forceful encoruagment. John taught his children, neighbors, and anyone else who would listen how to replace windows, frame structures, plant flowers, wall paper, build a tower and many more valuable life skills.
Whether it was driving to a game, the dump, or a job site John’s van was a recognizable part of Scituate. Most often, the van was parked in the parking lot a Widow’s Walk Golf Course. John loved to play golf, it could be nine holes in the morning, afternoon, or evening. If it was later in the evening he’d sneak in a few more holes on the backside without telling anyone. Golf was John’s favorite pastime. He made many friends on the golf course. He would happily be paired with a stranger and they would finish the round laughing and smiling. As a younger man John loved to run. John would share stories of running all over Boston with his friends. He was especially fond of running up and down the Charles River. The peak of his career was running both the Boston and New York marathons on a few occasions.
John was a great father, friend, and husband!
