Of Norwell and Scituate, formerly of Belmont and Somerville passed away peacefully on April 22, 2011 at the VA Hospital in Brockton. Beloved husband of the late Elizabeth (McCullen) Murphy and father of the late James Murphy. Devoted father of William and his wife Susan of Norwell, and father in law of Ellen Murphy of Hull. Loving grandfather of Patrick of N.H, Brendan and Michael of Hull, Caitlin, Sarah and William P. of Norwell. Brother of Joe and his wife Rita of Somerville, brother in law of Muriel McCullen and Barbara Corcoran of Westboro. Jim was proud of his Somerville roots, and of his WWII service in the U.S. Navy, aboard the USS Van Valkenburgh, patrolling Nagasaki, Japan. After Naval discharge, he worked for the Somerville Police, MDC Police and as a State Investigator for the ABCC. Later in his career Jim worked in executive security for the Sheraton Corp. and Bank of New England. Jim adored his wife Betty and they had 54 great years together raising a family and sacrificing happily for their sons. He set a selfless example of what it means to be a hard working Dad; at the same time he and Betty had great times at countless family parties and “times” where they danced the night away. Visiting hours are Thursday April 28 from 4 to 8 pm at the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate, MA. Funeral Mass is Friday, April 29 at 10:00 am at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, Scituate Harbor. Burial to follow at the Veteran’s National Cemetery, Bourne at 12:45PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s memory may be made to the Brockton VA Hospice Program, VA Hospital, 940 Belmont St., Brockton, MA 02301.
