Howard "Mecca" Cole of Norwell, age 87, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on May 24, 2018. Born to Howard and Margaret (Hernan) Cole of Scituate, he was the devoted and beloved husband of 64 years to his wife Joan (Perry). He leaves behind daughter Judith Norton, her husband Barry and grandsons Kevin and Daniel Kidd. Daughter Jean Wernig, her husband William, granddaughters Jill, Julie, Tara and Heidi. Son John Cole, his wife Deborah, granddaughter Jacquelyn, grandsons Jonathan and Jared. Daughter Janice Cole, her wife Maura. He was uncle and great uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Mecca also leaves behind a brother Kevin Cole of Naples FL, a sister Frances Nelson, and her husband Walter of Hawaii. He was predeceased by sisters Joan Cole Sullivan, Jean Cole Harris and Peggy Cole Thompson.
After Joan and his children, Mecca's greatest love was being at sea on his F/V Ocean Spray out of Scituate Harbor. He loved lobstering and was actively fishing into his 80's. He was also a retired Scituate firefighter and a cranberry farmer.
When not on the ocean, Mecca and Joan enjoyed skiing and wintered at Tenney Mountain, NH. Joan and Mecca travelled all over the world on many ski trips.
He was a cherished husband and father and he leaves behind many loyal friends.
Visiting hours will take place on Tuesday May 29th from 4 pm to 8 pm
Funeral from the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd., Scituate, on Wednesday May 30th, at 9 a.m. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent Street, Scituate.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
Interment will be private.
