Gregory Charles Shinney, 51, longtime Scituate resident, passed away unexpectedly on June 23, 2022. He was the beloved husband of Amy E. Carey Shinney with whom he shared 18 years of marriage. He was the proud and adoring father of Caroline Carey and Charles James. Born in 1970, Greg was the son of the late Noreen (Quirk) and Charles Shinney of Canton. Upon the passing of his parents, he was lovingly raised by his uncle and aunt, the late Michael T. and Mary E. (Queeney) Shinney of Scituate.
Greg graduated from Scituate High School in 1989 and went on to complete a post-graduate year at Bridgton Academy in Maine. Following Dean College in Franklin, MA, Greg completed his undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from Springfield College in 1995. His passion for sports and fitness led him to enjoy a lengthy career as a fitness director at Black Rock Country Club and the South Shore YMCA.
Greg’s children, Caroline and Charlie, were his heart and soul. He never missed a sporting event - from Caroline’s softball games to Charlie’s hockey games - he was there for them all. Greg was their biggest cheerleader and coach, on the fields and at the rink. He was always telling jokes and making everyone laugh. He had a profound impact on the entire Scituate community through his spirit and love of life and his commitment to and involvement with school and youth sports. Greg was an avid golfer who loved playing 18 holes with his friends and family. Greg was one of a kind and everyone that was lucky enough to know him feels the void.
Loving brother of Brian Shinney, the late John Shinney, Michael Sousa, Patrick (Yuko) Meegan, Michael (Rachel) Meegan, Robert (Michelle) Meegan, George Meegan, Robert (Jodi) Goodwin, and the late Matthew P. Sousa. He is survived by his in-laws James and Mary Ellen Carey, Molly (Kevin) Carey, Gretchen (Ray) Carey, Janice Meegan and Deb Sousa. He is also survived by his nephew Mathew Shinney, niece Neva Chung, many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins, and countless dear friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent Street, Scituate, followed by a celebration of life at Black Rock Country Club, 19 Clubhouse Dr., Hingham, MA at noon. Public visitation omitted.
