Forever proud to be from Weymouth, George was born on May 1, 1946, to Eleanor (Spada) and George Manning, Sr. He grew up on Lake Street, where he was also looked after by his older siblings Ann and William (Bill), his grandmother, Nora, and extended family. He was a lifelong devotee of Denly’s pizza and often spoke fondly of swimming in Whitman’s Pond and hanging around Jackson Square. George graduated from Weymouth High School in 1964, where he played football and served as class vice president.
The first in his family to attend college, George hitchhiked daily to Boston College, where he graduated with a degree in economics in 1968. He settled into a long career in business and although he sometimes facetiously quipped to “not like people,” nothing could be further from the truth – it was no surprise that he found passion and success in human resources and ultimately retired as a Global Vice President at MKS Instruments in Andover.
In 1973, he met the love of his life, Lee Ann Murphy. They went on their first date at the Barn Door restaurant in Norwell, the same town where they would later raise their children. They were married in 1978, and went on to have two sons, Patrick and Brian.
In 2008, he retired and focused on attempting to cure a slice on the golf course, traveling with Lee, and spending time with his growing family.
George was the epitome of warmth and was quick with an embrace and a laugh. His family was his world.
He is predeceased by his parents and his siblings. He is survived by his wife Lee, of Scituate; his son, Patrick (and his wife, Jill) of Minneapolis, MN; his son, Brian (and his husband, Alex) of Boston, MA; and his beloved grandchildren, Clare and Emma.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Beth Israel Deaconess - Plymouth for their loving care of George in his final days.
Visiting hours will be held at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home in Scituate on Wednesday, August 16th from 4-8pm. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary of the Nativity on Thursday, August 17th at 10am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Closing the Gap Foundation.
