Elizabeth "Betsy" Cooney

Elizabeth "Betsy" Cooney of Scituate, MA passed away peacefully on September 28th, 2022. She was the adored daughter of the late Howard and Margaret (Cronin) Leonard. She recently celebrated her 89th birthday and lead a full life filled with her family and a deep and unwavering love for sports, especially her beloved Red Sox. There was no greater or more devoted fan.

Betsy was a trailblazer for her time and upon graduation from high school, she attended Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont, where she excelled academically and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in French. Some of her fondest memories are of her time spent as a “Panther” watching endless baseball and hockey games. She had a fierce competitiveness to her when playing any game or sport, especially cribbage, skillfully taking down her opponents. Her artistic side came through in the many beautiful things she lovingly created with her knitting and crocheting of shawls for chemotherapy patients, blankets, scarves, and of course her signature mittens.

Betsy is survived by so many loved ones including her children Michael Cooney and his wife Lisa of Norwell, Emily Kyriakides and her husband Teddy of Duxbury, Elizabeth Cooney of Wells, ME, Garrett Cooney and his wife Cathie of Scituate, Peter Cooney, Jr. and his wife Diane of Scituate, Laura Carroll and her husband Joe of Scituate, Jenna Dann and her husband Jared of Norwell, Andrew Cooney of Pembroke and the late Judith Cooney Joseph. She is also the cherished “Gram” of 21 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

She was the loving sister of the late Howard C. Leonard, III and is survived by Howard’s wife, Lucille Leonard of CT. She is also survived by many dear nieces and nephews.

A private family funeral service will take place at St. Mary of the Nativity Church in Scituate.
