NYPD Deputy Inspector Robert McGowan (ret.) passed away peacefully on June 12, 2015 in the company of his daughter Laureen. Robert was born in Morningside Heights on July 21, 1922 to Cyril and Beatrice McGowan. He attended Erasmus High School in Brooklyn and entered the Army Specialized Training Program at Georgetown University in 1943. As a rifleman Sargent in the 102 Infantry Division, Robert saw action throughout France, Belgium, and Germany and was grievously wounded during the Battle of the Bulge. After recovering, Robert entered the NYPD as a patrolman, and rose to become the Commander of Detectives in Manhattan. He married Catherine O’Donnell in 1946 and after 62 years of marriage, Catherine died in 2008. His leadership of the Criminal Investigation Bureau initiated the Witness Protection Program among other innovations that disrupted organized crime. During his time leading the Bronx Youth Gang Task Force in the 1970s, he brought to bear his familiarity with being an underprivileged youth on the streets of New York to redirect gang energies. Robert had been a semi-pro football player who later switched to tennis and played that game with vigor into his 80s. As a gifted natural athlete, he coached numerous sports teams for the CYO. Robert is survived by his children Kathleen, Robert, Stephen, Joan, Laureen, James, and Patrick. He is predeceased by his beloved son Brian. Robert also has seventeen grandchildren and two great-children. His wake will be held on Monday June 15 from 2-4 and 7-9 at Bennett Funeral Home in Eastchester. There will be a Funeral Mass Tuesday June 16, 2015 at 10:00 at Our Lady of Fatima Church, followed by internment at Gates of Heaven Cemetery.
