Michael E. McTighe passed away peacefully on February 9, 2023. He was born in Queens, NY to Halina (Rossa), a successful banker and Michael J. McTighe, a retired NYC Narcotics Detective and WWII Marine Veteran. Influenced by the work and dedication of his father, Mike’s career in law enforcement began in 1971 when he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Military Policeman. He was transferred to Allied Occupied West Berlin where he was assigned to the famous Berlin Brigade and a military intelligence unit. Later Mike was assigned to work with Her Majesty’s Royal Air Force Police in the British sector of West Berlin. After his discharge in 1974, he entered the civilian sector and worked in the banking industry, and later as an Investigator for the New York City Housing Authority. In 1986, Mike was appointed by District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau’s Office to serve as a Detective in his Investigations Bureau. During the span of his twenty four year career with the office Mike’s expertise in conducting electronic surveillances was well known and relied on, giving him the nickname “Mikey Wires”.
Mike’s dedication to his association was nothing short of exemplary. During his tenure of service, thirteen of those years were spent representing his union; first as a Trustee, later as Vice President, and finally as President of the DIA. As a union leader Mike was a consummate professional and always carried himself with dignity and class. While President, his administration secured, either through contract negations, or legislation, benefits that were long overdue. Through his dedication and contributions he changed the lives of so many people and leaves behind a proud, forever lasting, legacy.
To know Mike was to love him. Ask anyone who’s had the privilege of meeting him and they’ll all agree- Mike was a true gentleman. A humble man, a story teller, a gentle giant, with a heart of gold, the epitome of class, dignity and respect; he always led with love. He loved his country, he loved his city, he loved his children and above all, he loved God. Throughout all his life’s many twists and turns, Mike never questioned the hard stuff thrown his way. Even in his darkest days, his faith never wavered. May we all follow his example and may he forever be remembered as the amazing man he was.
Mike is survived by his daughter Michelle (Joe), his sons Michael (Ella) and Matthew, and his grandson Joseph Michael.
