Died November 7, 2022 in White Plains, NY
Before immigrating to America, Maureen lived in Killybegs, County Donegal. She began her early education at Sacred Heart Convent School in Armagh, Northern Ireland, where she loved poetry and sports. After journeying to New York City on the SS Caledonia at age 15 with a matron serving as chaperone, Maureen joined her parents and brothers in Brooklyn. She completed her high school at St Francis Xavier, and earned her RN during nurses’ training at St Mary’s College, associated with St John’s Hospital.
In the 1940’s, Maureen worked as a nurse for Dr. George Miller McKee in his 5th Avenue dermatology practice, across from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She met her future husband, FBI Special Agent Gus Micek, through mutual friends. After marrying at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Maureen and Gus began raising their family in the Parkchester section of the Bronx. They moved to the north end of Eastchester on a block filled with lovely neighbors and lots of children – it was ideal for bringing up seven children.
During the 1960’s and 70’s, Maureen was involved with the Fordham Prep Mother’s Club and volunteered with other ladies at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Scarsdale to help serve the needs of the Rosary Hill Home in nearby Hawthorne, NY.
Before the last of her seven children went off to college, Maureen returned to her beloved profession, nursing. After taking refresher courses, Maureen began working at White Plains Hospital in the outpatient clinic and then on 5E, a Med-Surg unit.
Maureen’s other love was Geography, and she was blessed with many opportunities to travel. She toured parts of Europe including the Mediterranean with nursing companions, Hilda and Peggy, and she returned to Ireland several times. Travels with her husband included stays in continental US and Hawaii, as well. During her last seven years, Maureen lived out her days at the Ambassador of Scarsdale.
She is survived by Andrew Micek (Patricia), Tom Micek, Mukta Kaur Khalsa (Guru Sahay), Tim Micek (Deirdre), Rosemary Spahr, Ann Baldwin (John), and nine grandchildren.
