Following his graduation from Georgetown Law School in 1951, Joe Fitzpatrick began his career with the Patent Section of the Anti Trust Division of the United States Justice Department. After several years in private practice at another firm, in 1971, he helped found Fitzpatrick, Cella, Harper & Scinto, which now numbers over 175 lawyers with offices in New York, Washington, DC, and California. The Fitzpatrick law firm is one of the leading intellectual property law firms in the country. For more than 40 years, Mr. Fitzpatrick served as lead counsel on behalf of major multinational and US corporations in intellectual property proceedings and trials, representing some of the world’s technology leaders such as Canon Inc., Merck & Co., Bristol Meyers. E. I. Du Pont, Union carbide and countless others. He was selected as a top business litigator and intellectual property law practitioner in the 2005-2010 editions of Best Lawyers in America and the in the 2006-2011 issues of Who's Who: Legal Patent. He was elected as a Fellow the American College of Trial Lawyers.
In 2009, Joe Fitzpatrick celebrated his twenty fifth anniversary as a member of Daytop Family Association. Joe served Daytop in many capacities, including Chairman of Daytop Village, Inc. from 2003-2005 and Chairman of Daytop International from, 2005-2008. With 26 sites across the country, Daytop is one of the largest and oldest drug free, self help programs in the United States.
Joseph Mark Fitzpatrick was born on May 27, 1925 in Jersey City, New Jersey, the only son of Joseph Francis and Meave Wilson Fitzpatrick. His father, also an attorney, served as Secretary of the State of New Jersey from 1926-1931, and was active in the Democratic party in both Jersey City and New Jersey for most of his professional life.
Joe Fitzpatrick graduated from St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City and Stevens Institute of Technology in 1945, He also served in the United States Navy, where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant JG.
Joe married Elizabeth Keane on June 18,1949. Together, they raised a family of four children in Scarsdale, NY. Joe is survived by his wife and children: Nancy of Bronxville, NY, Susan of Buffalo,NY, Christopher of Pittsfied, VT and Stephen of Sleepy Hollow, NY. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
The funeral will be at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Scarsdale, NY on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at 10:00am. Donations may be made in Mr. Fitzpatrick’s memory to Daytop Village, 54 West 40 St, NY, NY 10018.
