A fourth generation Angeleno, Mr. Johnson was born in Los Angeles June 3, 1916. He attended Whittier High School and was graduated from California Institute of Technology in 1938 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering.
After graduation he moved to New York to work for Ingersoll-Rand Corp. During World War II he worked on the Manhattan Project in Painted Post NY and Darlington UK.
He married his English bride, the former Gladys Kate Mauldon, better known as Midge, in 1943.
In 1953 he founded the American Messer branch of the German Messer Griesheim which built air fractionation and liquefaction plants across the United States. He then worked for Sumitomo Shoji until his retirement in 1997. His business travels took him all over the world and he formed many friendships that would last a lifetime.
He was a great tinkerer and kept his pride and joy, a 1938 Alvis, in excellent running condition until he sold it in 2008 to the president of the Alvis club in England and it was repatriated.
He was active in the Scarsdale Community Baptist Church for many years, serving several terms as trustee.
He is survived by his daughter Christina Johnson Parsons and her two sons, Christopher Johnson Parsons and his wife Denise and Chad Stuart Parsons.
A memorial service is planned for the fall.
