I’m so sorry and saddened to hear of the passing of  Hughie.  I got to meet Mr. Doherty through my family. My dad Alex, my uncle Joe and my grandpa Abel were all Ironworker Rod busters and worked along side Hughie. I got the chance to work with Hughie back in the 80’s when my dad took me to work in the summers. And it was an experience that I cherish working with those men. Made me the Ironworker I am today. Over 20 yrs in the trade.

I am so sad to hear of Hugh's passing. As a neighbor, I remember the lovely Irish parties held a your home on Edgewood with Gertie drawing me to listen to the Irish singing and Hugh smiling inside and welcoming me into their home.

As your childhood neighbour I loved to visit your Mom and Dad’s place on Edgewood and then later on Plains. They always made us feel welcome. I remember Mr. Doherty good heartedly teasing me about joining the convent so I would never be unemployed.  To my Mom and Dad, Hugh and Gerdie were loyal friends who on more than one occasion helped our family out. The friendship club at Corpus Christi was a favourite outing of my parents and I am so happy to have memories of joining them occasionally. Gerdie was genuinely interested in people. During our visits, over many cups of tea, we would swap stories.  Hugh sat quietly with a mischievous smile and always with a witty comment.  The picture you chose captured him perfectly. Wishes of comfort and good memories to your family.

We were so sorry to hear of the passing of Hugh. He and Gerdie were stalwarts at the 5 pm mass over the past many years and I liked their quiet presence in the pew in front of me. Hugh would give a lovely little nod when he approached with the collection basket - I think I gave more given his friendly demeanor!

Heartbroken to learn of the passing of of Hughie. He was such a selfless and all round good man, with all  that Irish cheeky charm. He and Gerdie are together now, looking after you; Maureen, Kevin Hughie and his much loved Grandchildren, now.

I was so sorry to hear that Hughie had died. He was a pillar (along with Gerdie) of our Corpus Christi parish family and I have so many happy memories of conversations with each of them. Condolences to the family with deep sympathy and prayer.

I’ve have so many fond memories 
Of working with your dad and my dad.  They both taught me so much about being a great Rodman. I got to work with him in the early 1990’s on various projects and he was responsible for me getting my Journeyman Book and wage increase well ahead of when I should have.  I will always remember him saying, “hey young Barros , “pork-chop” you work like a Journeyman you should get paid like one. “. Got the pay raise the following week. 

He helped shape me to be a great Ironworker, and now I am fortunate to represent Local 721 membership as their President. 

I having nothing but the upmost respect for your dad and the legacy he has left behind, as can be seen by the various landmarks throughout our jurisdiction he had a hand in building.

I met Mr. Doherty when I was 8 years old, more than 40 years ago. Mr. Doherty used to tease me often and told me he saw my picture up at the post at Greenwood racetrack.  He was kind, and funny, and always welcomed me, and anyone else that showed up at his door on Edgewood.  He will be missed.  Raise a glass for Hugh and remember him fondly.

Hughie and i not only shared a birthday but we shared a love of the Toronto Maple Leafs. I loved talking hockey with him and loved his stories and hearing him laugh.
