November 25, 1930 – January 3, 2023
It is with deep sorrow and much love that the family of Dennis Széchy announces his peaceful passing January 3, 2023, at the age of 92.
He is lovingly remembered by his children: Maria (Michael) and Dennis Jr. (Kathy); grandchildren: Christopher (Jessica), Cassandra (Leonardo), Stephanie (Andrew), Colin and Justin; great-granddaughters Charlotte and Scarlett; great-grandson Robert; sister, Edit Soós (Budapest, Hungary); sisters-in-law Elizabeth Némethy and Helen Szablya; and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his loving wife of 64 years, Marietta (Mary) Széchy (née Bartha-Kovács), and his parents Charles and Margaret.
Dennis was born in 1930 in Budapest Hungary. He and his then fiancée Marietta bravely emigrated to Canada in 1956 and went on to live in Winnipeg, Halifax, and soon after settled in Toronto. Dennis was a highly respected Civil Engineer who earned his Masters in Applied Science after coming to Canada and spent much of his professional career designing civic and urban planning projects, not fully retiring until the age of 70. He was a man of principle and integrity who was kind, generous, honest and loving.
Family meant everything to Dennis including his extended family. He was devoted to his late wife and doted on his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Dennis was a gifted musician who excelled at playing the piano and organ and loved classical music, opera, and jazz. He passed his passion and love for music on to his family. He also deeply loved the family cottage on Lake of Bays in Muskoka. He spent as much time there as possible, enjoying the quiet mornings, swimming in the lake, speeding across the water in his boat or Sea-Doo, and beautiful sunsets and campfires in the evening. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was the master of just the right word or phrase in both Hungarian and English. He loved to talk, laugh, and have fun with family and friends. His wit, spirit, humour, love, and devotion will be deeply missed by all. Rest easy after a full life; We love you Apu, Nagypapa, Dédpapa.
We are extremely grateful for the exceptional care and compassion extended to Dennis by all of the dedicated staff at Cummer Lodge Long-Term Care facility, and previously at Revera Don Mills Retirement Home.
