William “Bill” Oscar Schumacher, 83, of Savannah, passed away at his home on September 14, 2013. Bill was born in Wheaton, Minnesota, on October 12, 1929 to the late Oscar and Martha Schumacher. Bill served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1954, serving in Germany, as well as Vienna, Austria. He received his Bachelors Degree in Physics from Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, and worked toward his Masters Degree at the University of Minnesota. Bill married Gigi Gjerde in 1958, and as their family grew, they relocated to Savannah. He took a job with the City of Savannah as a City Administrator until his retirement. Bill was a very active member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1965, and was a member of the Over 50’s Club, as well as Wednesday Bible Study. Bill loved to travel, especially through Europe, visiting with family and friends in Norway and Germany. He also loved music, and had a collection of classical pieces and opera.
Bill is survived by his wife of over 55 years Gladys “Gigi” Schumacher, son Stephen (Amy) Schumacher of Naperville, IL, son Karl (Sheryll) Schumacher of Savannah, daughter Heidi (Gary) Swanson of Pittsburgh, PA, daughter Rose (Sergio) Almanza of Madison , AL, and son Jon (Traci) Schumacher of Savannah, grandchildren Paul Schumacher, Sarah Schumacher, Ryan Schumacher, Nathanael Swanson, Jacob (Emma) Swanson, Benjamin Swanson, Caleb Swanson, Elisabeth Swanson, Luke Swanson, Seth Swanson, Isaac Swanson, Thaddaeus Swanson, Justin Almanza, Adam Almanza, Amelia Almanza, Sophia Almanza, Alex Almanza, Anna Schumacher, William Schumacher, and Evan Schumacher, and brother Paul Lyle Schumacher of Eagan, MN.
Visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Thursday, September 19th at Fairhaven Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel. Funeral Services will be held at 11am on Friday, September 20th at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor John Hopkins officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwich Cemetery.
