In her lifetime, Susan accomplished many things. She was valedictorian of her graduating class at the Myers Special Education Program in 1979. After graduation, she was employed for over thirty years at the Coastal Center for Developmental Services. Susan was a member and officer of the CCDS Client Advisory Board, a member of People First, and a Peer Counselor with the Georgia Association for Retarded Citizens. Susan bowled for over twenty years with the Ambucs Bowling League and faithfully attended summer camp at Camp Big Heart. She was a lifelong communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Susan will be remembered for her kindness, her gentleness, and infectious smile. She was a loving daughter and sister and found great pride in being an aunt to her nephews and niece.
Susan is survived by her parents, Thomas J. Whalen, Jr., and Patricia K. Whalen of Savannah, Georgia; four brothers, Thomas J. Whalen, III and his wife, Zdena, of Weston, Florida; Stephen K. Whalen and his wife, Laura, of Avondale Estates, Georgia; Charles R. Whalen and his wife, Jennifer, of Athens, Georgia; and Michael E. Whalen and his wife, Beth, of Savannah, Georgia; one sister, Mary Beth Whalen Janda and her husband, Chris, of Roswell, Georgia; nine nephews, one niece and her grandmother, Mrs. J. Elizabeth Kelly of Savannah, Ga.
Visitation: 5 – 7 p.m. Thursday, at Fairhaven Funeral Home – Hubert C. Baker Chapel.
Rosary Service: 6 p.m. Thursday in the Hubert C. Baker Chapel.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Father John Lyons, officiating.
Interment: Bonaventure Cemetery.
