He was born in Omaha, Nebraska, to parents Martha and Claude Bennett. He was a 1935 graduate of Savannah High School and a veteran who served in the Eighth Air Force at Hunter Field and in the European Theater in England.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dorothy Achenbach; and his loving wife of 67 years, Mildred Wilson Bennett.
He was retired from the US Army Corps of Engineers as Assistant Chief of the Drafting Room. He was a past president and Life Member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, where he served over 25 years. He was a former member of Central Christian Church where he served as a Deacon and Treasurer.
Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Ann “Skeet” Varnadoe, and her husband, Harvey; a son, Roy L. Bennett, Jr., and his wife, Janice, all of Savannah; as well as four grandsons; one granddaughter; three great grandsons; two great granddaughters; and step great grand children.
Visitation will be Friday, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Fairhaven Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel. ¬¬Funeral Services will be Saturday, 11:00 a.m. in the Hubert C. Baker Chapel, with Reverend Steven Helmly, officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens with military honors presented by the US Air Force from Charleston, South Carolina.
