Mr. Gary Durbin Smith, 75, died Friday, October 21 at home with family under the care of Hospice. He was born and raised in Miamisburg, Ohio and graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He attended the Coast Guard Academy and served in Savannah from 1958-1961. He worked as Director of Development at Nova University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and later as Vice President of Development at Barry University in Miami. After moving to Savannah in 1987 he served as the Director of Development for the Girl Scout Council of Southeast Georgia. Gary enjoyed entertaining friends and family with his sense of humor and gift for playing the piano. His oil paintings hang in the homes of family and friends. He instilled in his children a love of travel, adventure and an enduring curiosity about the natural world. In his memoirs he stated that everyone should take the time to tell the story of their life’s journey. His favorite saying was “A good attitude multiplies achievement.” He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Glenda Brannen Smith, his two sons, Denny D. Smith (Jenny) of Savannah and Timothy G. Smith (Kim) of Hendersonville, NC; 3 grandchildren, Danielle, Maddie, and Austin. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM, Friday, October 28 at Fairhaven Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 29 at 11:00 AM at St. Luke United Methodist Church.
